Italian wine exports 2020

The Covid – 19 pandemic has had a strong impact on the agribusiness market, generating several issues, among which è it is also necessary to include the’important drop in exports in the wine sector.

According to data collected already in November 2020 by the Vinitaly -Nomisma Wine Monitor Observatory, in fact, 2020 would have recorded a contraction in the value of world wine imports estimated (on a customs basis) by more than 3 billion euros compared to 2019, also linked to the’important reduction in foreign sales by France, a country that has always played a predominant role in the sector.

In particular, Italy closed the year with a growth in wine exports of about 2.9 percent compared to 2018 due to a positive result found in the markets of the United States (+4.2 percent Italian wine imports), Switzerland (+3.8), Russia (+12 percent) and surprisingly also in France (+6 percent), with important improvements also in Japan and Canada.

The forecasts for Italian exports in 2020 made by the same Observatory, have only partially come true.

In fact, fortunately, Italy has not è been forced to measure itself with the dire consequences that would have resulted from the threatened tightening of U.S. duties on Italian wine exports – unlike one of its most important competitors such as France – as was rightly feared at the beginning of 2020.
